USS Rochester CA-124 Heavy Cruiser, original photo 1948
Up for auction is this
original 1948 Photograph of the USS Rochester CA-124 Oregon City Class Heavy
Cruiser. This was photo made in Venice, Italy, between March 1 and June
14, 1948, when the ship made a Mediterranean tour as flagship for Admiral
Forrest Sherman. Sherman’s task force was in the Mediterranean to be
prepared for trouble during the formation of Israel. In the background of
the photo you can see the Campanile and Basilica of the Piazza San Marco.
The ship was commissioned Dec. 20, 1947, and would later receive six battle
stars for service during the Korean War.
