Royal Leerdam Elephant (Oliphant) Glass Sculpture by Lucienne Bloch

Up for auction is this Satin glass "Oliphant" sculpture designed by Lucienne Bloch in 1929 and executed by Glasfabriek Leerdam of the Netherlands. The figurine measures about 2 inches tall by about 2 inches long. It's in excellent condition with only one very small surface blemish. The piece has a very Art Deco period vibe, as you might expect from this artist who was one of Diego Rivera's bosom buddies. The elephant is one of several glass animal sculptures from this artist's oeuvres and quite a rare one at that.

Lucienne Bloch (1909-1999) was a Switzerland-born American artist. Although she is best known for her murals and for her association with the Mexican artist Diego Rivera, Bloch worked in many types of media. Beginning in 1929, she designed glass sculptures for Royal Leerdam. Soon afterward her glass designs came to the attention of Frank Lloyd Wright who invited her to teach at his architectural school.
