Jelly or Aspic Kitchen Mold With Thistle Pattern
Up for auction is this Thistle pattern kitchen molding dish. In spite of doing a lot of digging for information, I know very little about this mold. It would have been used for molding jellies or aspics or butter. It has a plain, creamy white glaze. It has a large thistle design in the bottom. It's in the form of an elongated octagon and measures about 6½ inches by 4½ inches by 2¾ inches deep. It has a bulbous shape to the bottom, with two legs that make it stand level.
It has no markings, although someone has added a handwritten label on the bottom that says "1880 Thistle from Scotland Buttermold." Which certainly could be true, as the thistle is the official symbol of Scotland, and it's not the sort of thing most other peoples would choose to decorate their food!
It has two hairline cracks, one of which can be seen in the picture because the glaze has formed a dark line along it. The other is barely detectable. It also has a very small chip in the edge of one of the feet. It has some mottling to the glaze. Overall it's in very good condition for display.
This is one of three ceramic molds I purchased at an estate sale. I think this is probably an antique, dating back to the Victorian era, or perhaps older. Please check my other items if you'd like to see the others.
